Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was when African American literature, music, entertainment, and visual arts blossomed. It was also around the time that groups and organizations started to form to in effort to improve circumstances of African Americans.
Many of the people that went to New York settled in Harlem, so did a good number of African American New yorkers.
Meanwhile, Southern African Americans musicians brought Jazz with them to the north and Harlem. The area of Harlem soon became a very sophitistic literary and artistic center.
Many of whom live in harlem started to writing a variety of fine and and highly original works dealing with African Americans lives.
By 1925, 70% of Harlem was black owned and businesses flourished. The huge influx of new citizens into Harlem created crowded streets and rents that were often twice as much as white owned sections of New York City.
